There was a lot of announcements during the most recent State of Play Livestream event, but one announcement stole a lot of the thunder from everything else announced during State of Play. Death Stranding was a major announcement after Hideo Kojima was ousted from Konami in 2015. Death Stranding sold pretty well for Sony and their partners. As of this writing, Death Stranding sold approximately 5 Million copies worldwide across PlayStation 4, and PC. Shortly thereafter, Kojima released a Director’s Cut for PS5. And now, Kojima is hard at work with Death Stranding 2, which is set to be released in 2025. Along with that announcement, Kojima revealed the final name of DS2. The final name is “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.” DS2 is a shortened name for the game. It appeared in previous trailers as “DS2.”
But that wasn’t the biggest announcement during State of Play – During the January 2024 State of Play Livestream, Hermen Hulst announced that Hideo Kojima would return to the stealth/action genre in the form of a new action-espionage series and/or franchise.
“PHYSINT” is a working title, I assume, but Kojima says that it’s not just a game, it’s also planned to be a film. Columbia Pictures will be distributing the film, and I am assuming Hideo Kojima will be directing the film – which is Hideo Kojima’s dream; to make a film. Sony encouraged Hideo Kojima to create this new franchise to be akin to “Metal Gear” (or Metal Gear Solid.)
